Using Social Media as a Tool to Spread Awareness of Deaf Education Services

Social media is an effective tool that is routinely utilized to develop connections, obtain information, and identify available services to meet a variety of needs. Studies have shown that use of social media has steadily increased over the past decade, especially for marketing and informative purposes, and is an essential mechanism for communication. This presentation will 1) discuss the importance of using social media in deaf education services and how it can be used as an effective avenue of disseminating information and promoting awareness of deafness, 2) provide suggestions for connecting families of children who are deaf or hard of hearing who would benefit from opportunities to learn of others’ experiences, and 3) strategies for spreading awareness of programs and service delivery options (both in-person and via tele-intervention). Examples will include highlighting useful materials for professionals and parents available on USU’s Hear To Learn website. In addition, this presentation will present suggestions and recommendations for participants to develop or expand a social media presence in their program or community. The Utah State University (USU) Listening and Spoken Language social media account was created to inform prospective students and families of the breadth of LSL services available, such as campus-based and distance graduate training program options, and tele-intervention therapy services for families who would benefit from a distance service delivery option. Information from the USU social media presence will be utilized as an example in this presentation.

  • Participants will discuss how social media can be an effective tool in spreading awareness and information for deaf education program options available to families, professionals, and students.
  • Participants will discuss the value of social media to create and promote parent connections.
  • Participants will discuss suggestions and recommendations of how to implement social media in an effective and useful way for their own programs.
