Considerations in Hearing Device Technology in Children with Developmental Delays
Approximately 30-40% of children with reduced hearing also have a comorbid disability that can significantly impact development outcomes, particularly language acquisition (Fitzpatrick et al, 2014). Research strongly indicates that the early diagnosis of hearing loss and fitting of amplification in children with complex disabilities are critical factors in the development of language for these children (Kaga et al., 2017). Approximately 25-40% of children born with hearing loss who also have significant additional disabilities struggle to reach their potential regarding their speech, language, and cognitive outcomes (Cupples et al, 2014). Parents of children with developmental differences and hearing loss report that consistency of device use is often challenging due to a multitude of factors (Moeller et al, 2009). Parents suggest that audiologists need to be supportive, but realistic in describing the potential benefits of hearing aids to parents (Moeller et al, 2009). The next question that audiologists often struggle to answer is what hearing device technology will best suit each child given their developmental considerations and family needs. This project will describe and outline features, accessories, assistive device and strategies to consider when selecting and fitting hearing technology on children who are deaf and hard-of-hearing with co-occurring developmental challenges. The aim of this project is to provide an accessible resource for audiologists and families to guide them in making informed decisions regarding hearing device technology that will maximize the use and acceptance of these devices for children with developmental differences.
- Identify challenges audiologists and families might encounter when selecting hearing device technology for patients with developmental delays
- Select appropriate features for hearing device technology and assistive listening devices given developmental delays.
- Assist parents and caregivers in making informed decisions regarding hearing device technology and assistive listening devices.

Presenter: Kassandra Madore
Kassandra Madore, B.S. is a fourth year audiology extern at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Kassie recently started her externship at Children’s Colorado in May of 2019 and will be a LEND fellow. She completed her undergraduate degree in Communication Disorders at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2016. She is currently pursuing her doctorate degree at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. Her fourth year externship at Children’s Colorado will be her final year of schooling before receiving her Doctorate degree in Audiology.
