Successful Teletherapy Sessions: During COVID and Beyond

COVID-19 brought with it the challenge of switching from in-person to internet services. This responsibility to provide quality services via the internet to children, to parents, and to families can be overwhelming and daunting. A main focus of this presentation will be to provide ideas and suggestions for coaching parents and primary caregivers via the internet. It is essential that teachers/therapists learn how to use their existing skills and knowledge to support families via tele-communication. This presentation will provide professionals with strategies for implementing successful sessions when working with families via the internet. Techniques for “coaching” parents during activities with their children, in order to enhance communication, will be emphasized. The pandemic will eventually subside, and providers will be able to resume in-person sessions, but the need for teletherapy services will continue. Developing one’s skill set related to the provision of internet services is essential. As more Early Intervention providers become skilled in serving children and their families via the internet, the greater the likelihood that services will reach more children. This presentation will be chock full of creative ideas for working with children and their families via the internet. The emphasis of this presentation will be on describing how to implement an effective teletherapy session. Topics to be included are: -transitioning from in-person to internet sessions -gathering information from parents and/or primary caregivers -using joint planning effectively to plan the sessions -choosing goals for the parent and the child for each session -strategies for parents and caregivers to provide speech, vocabulary, language, and listening stimulation throughout the children’s daily routines -coaching parents and/or primary caregivers during routine activities -reflection and follow-up to increase parent and caregiver learning -managing the technology Videotaped segments of teletherapy will be used to demonstrate skills and techniques.

  • 1. At the end of this session, participants will be able to describe the components of a quality tele-intervention session.
  • At the end of this session, participants will be able to describe strategies for enhancing communication between parents and their child.
  • At the end of this session, participants will be able to list techniques for being an effective “coach” via teletherapy.

Betsy Moog Brooks (), The Moog Center for Deaf Education, bbrooks@moogcenter.org;
Betsy Moog Brooks is the Executive Director of the Moog Center for Deaf Education. She received her Master degree in Speech and Hearing from Washington University and is certified in Deaf Education, Behavior Disorders, Learning Disabilities, Early Childhood Education, and is a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist. She holds a Doctorate of Education in Instructional Leadership with an emphasis in Andragogy, the study of adult learners. She has been in the field of early intervention for more than 35 years. Betsy is the author of the book, My Baby and Me: A Book About Teaching Your Child to Talk. She has lectured throughout the US, South America, and Europe. Betsy continues to provide direct child service and parent support to families with children birth to three. She has provided parent support through teleintervention for more than 10 years.

Tabitha Holtmeyer is a Teacher of the Deaf at the Moog Center for Deaf Education. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Deaf Education and her Masters of Arts specializing in Special Education from Fontbonne University. Tabitha is certified in Deaf Education, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and is a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist. Tabitha provides individual instruction to toddlers and works with families providing parent support and coaching parents of children birth to three. In addition, Tabitha provide services via the internet through the Teleschool Program at the Moog Center.
