Going Beyond the Goal Bank- Forming Functional Goals for Children with Multiple Diagnosis
Language development and communication is a vital component in the growth of a child with hearing loss. However, for children with hearing loss and have multiple diagnoses and needs, language development may not be the only priority for intervention services. This results in a child having many specialists on their collaborative team and can lead to “goal” fatigue as parents are tasked to track each specialists’ suggestions and plans and share those individual plans amongst team members. This can create an overwhelming list of tasks for families to work on and may result in burnout. While interdisciplinary teams are working hard to avoid these potential barriers, writing meaningful goals for a child with multiple needs can be difficult and requires additional communication with team members. This presentation will directly address these issues with the following objectives:
Help parents prioritize experiences and routines they want for their child and family.
Review ways for interdisciplinary teams to identify common communication needs and physical needs for prioritized activities as directed by parents.
Demonstrate how to write personalized, functional goals to meet identified needs.
Parents and Professionals will recognize opportunities for language development and physical development in their daily routines and settings.
Parents and Professionals will review collaboration strategies to prioritize functional goals across settings.
Parents and professions will receive ideas and direct instruction on how to write and track written goals for individual education plans.

Lauren Smith is a teacher of the Deaf in St. George Utah. She has coached parents and guardians of students from birth to age 10. She loves coaching over teleintervention and in person. Her special interests in the field include speech babble, coaching, and music as a teaching tool.
