Listening and Spoken Language Specialists and Early Intervention: Knowledge, Skills, and Certification
Children who are identified as deaf or hard of hearing through the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) process have an unprecedented opportunity to attain and maintain age-level skills as a result of family-centered early intervention services. One way to support the development of infants and toddlers is through timely and appropriate early intervention services. Many families who desire for their child to develop listening and spoken language (LSL) skills may find it difficult to identify and/or find the services of a qualified professional who can help them reach their desired LSL outcomes. This session will provide a brief overview of the principles related to Auditory-Verbal professional practice, the credentials, skills and knowledge of LSL professionals, and tools for identifying, locating, and connecting with professionals who provide these services. Both presenters will represent the AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language at this session. Some frequently-asked questions and answers about Listening and Spoken Language and Listening and Spoken Language Specialists will be shared. Professional and parent attendees will be asked to identify one “take-away” prior to leaving the session as a strategy for solidifying learning and/or sharing or applying new information following the conference. Attendees who wish to connect with the presenters regarding questions related to individual needs related to LSL services or certification are welcomed to do so at the conclusion of the session.
- Participants will gain an understanding of the principles of auditory-verbal practice.
- Participants will understand the major areas of knowledge and skills of certified Listening and Spoken Language Specialists (LSLS Cert. AVT and LSLS Cert. AVEd
- Participants will be able to identify the academic and professional standards required for LSLS certification.

Jenna Voss

Jenna Voss, PhD, CED, LSLS Cert AVEd, is an Associate Professor at Fontbonne University. She received her undergraduate degree in Deaf Education, and her master’s degree in Early Intervention in Deaf Education from Fontbonne University. She completed her PhD in Speech and Hearing Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. She holds teaching certification in Missouri in Deaf Education and Early Childhood Special Education. Her research interests include: health disparity among children and families living in poverty, primary prevention of abuse and neglect for children with disabilities, provider use of strategies and techniques in family-centered practice, and the application of research in cognitive psychology to the field of deaf education to improve pre-service instruction. Voss is co-author of two texts: Small Talk: Bringing Listening and Spoken Language to Your Young Child With Hearing Loss & Case Studies in Deaf Education: Inquiry, Application and Resources.

Gayla Guignard

Gayla Hutsell Guignard is the Chief Strategy Officer for the Alexander Graham Bell Association. She was the Indiana State EHDI Coordinator for six year and also spent two years as the inaugural Director of the Indiana Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education. Gayla also as many years of direct experience in providing services to children who are deaf/hard of hearing and their families and training of undergraduate and graduate audiology, speech-language pathology and deaf education students. Gayla's work as an audiologist, speech-language pathologist, certified listening and spoken language specialist, and non-profit and government program administrator has provided her with multi perspectives of the field.
