Award Winner/Nominee Details 2025
Barb Meyers
Serving more than 5 decades, Barb truly embodies the title “Deaf Educator. In the classroom, Barb taught preschool and held an Early Intervention caseload before volunteering to begin an innovative endeavor to offer Tele Therapy to families that lived in rural or remote areas where in-person sessions were not an option.
When St Joseph Institute for the Deaf began offering teletherapy services, it was theorized that heavy experience in teaching would be essential in developing the program. Comprehending the impact for children and benefit to parents worldwide, Barb was one of the first volunteers. She knew it would make a difference for rural families and worked tireless hours to perfect techniques still used today in teletherapy. Because it was an emerging program, she worked to ensure its success including presenting nationally on teletherapy techniques, secured funding through data collection and demonstrations, collaborated with translators to provide bi-lingual sessions, and provided services worldwide to expand the reach. Families across the globe now understand how to read an audiogram, how to test their child’s environmental auditory abilities, and how to begin language in the home. Thanks to Barb and other team members, Teletherapy was in place, and proven to provide good results, when COVID gave Early Intervention and School program no other option as the delivery method available for DHH children to receive specialized interventions.
She has always been an educator. Parents, children, young teachers, as well as professionals, are the beneficiaries of her skills. A Fontbonne University Professor for years, she understood the next generation would need a strong start to complete this important work. She has presented at the EDHI National Conference on topics she is very passionate about, such as using pictures to create language experience books and building strengths within culturally diverse families.
Her calm nature, deep teaching skills, and sharp eye for assessment has proven invaluable for children with hearing loss and their families. Her data collection and observations were the difference for a family grappling with a new diagnosis or celebrating progression of abilities.
A mentee stated this about her time with Barb.
I know that she personally impacts me as my #1 resource for advice when it comes to best serving my families. She is always going out of her way to help those in need, including coming in to work early and staying late so that families have access to LSL therapy.
She believes in the importance of the values of LSL, while also remaining open to new research and ways of thinking.
We are thrilled to nominate Barb Meyers, a dedicated professional for this recognition.
