Demystifying iEHDI

Jurisdictional EHDI programs, funded under the current CDC Cooperative Agreement DD20-2006, submit deidentified, individualized EHDI (iEHDI) data twice a year per birth cohort. The presentation will provide an overview of data collected, highlighting completeness on the 2021 birth cohort. Preliminary review suggests paternal characteristics (e.g., father’s race, ethnicity, and education) and risk factors for hearing loss are the most incomplete data fields reported. The speakers will provide an iEHDI data synopsis to guide efforts to promote health equity as well as identify disparities within iEHDI data quality. The impact of screening technology, geographic location, and factors influencing accurate and complete data will be shared. In addition, challenges experienced by one jurisdictional EHDI program, including relying on outside programs for a complete dataset (e.g., Vital Records, Part C) and benefits for improving usefulness and uniformity will be addressed. Participants will recognize how iEHDI data can influence and guide jurisdictional EHDI programs.

  • Participants will be able to explain the purpose of iEHDI data collection.
  • Participants will identify opportunities for use of iEHDI to reduce disparities and promote health equity.
  • Participants will be able to identify how jurisdictions can compile a complete and accurate iEHDI dataset.

Presenters/Authors

Kirsten Coverstone (Co-Presenter,Co-Author), MN Dept. of Health, Kirsten.Coverstone@state.mn.us ;
Dr. Kirsten Coverstone is an audiologist at the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) Newborn Screening Program. As a coordinator of Minnesota’s EHDI program, Kirsten has worked at the local, state, and national levels to support best practice for universal newborn screening, timely & complete audiologic follow-up for hearing, and early access to intervention. In addition, Kirsten implemented the statewide hearing instrument loaner program for infants and young children in Minnesota. Universal screening, education, and follow-up for congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) has been a longstanding aspiration as cCMV is the leading cause of non-genetic hearing loss and is intricately related to EHDI. She serves as current Co-Chair of the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH), & Co-Chair of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) EHDI Data Committee.
