Articulation Development of Children with a Hearing Loss: Results from an Auditory-Oral Program
Early diagnosis and amplification has provided children with a hearing loss earlier access to sound. Improved access to sound, combined with early intervention has made it possible for children with a hearing loss to acquire speech sounds comparable to their same age hear peers. Standardized articulation testing completed at Child’s Voice School, an Auditory Oral Moog Curriculum School suggest that amount of time in Early Intervention positively impacts articulation development. The age of diagnosis, length of time enrolled in Early Intervention, and device use of the children in the program will be described. The types of services provided, the professionals that provided the services, the focus of the therapy sessions, and parent education will also be detailed. Video will be presented to demonstrate the speech production of the children in the program. In addition to the standardized testing results, this presentation will compare previous research on articulation characteristics of children with a hearing loss to the articulation patterns the children at Child’s Voice School exhibit. Data collected in the program supports the benefits of early intervention, and suggests trends in speech development for children enrolled in Early Intervention programs. This information can be helpful for Early Intervention providers, Speech Pathologist, Deaf Educators, Audiologist, and Program Coordinators.

Brandi Harveth has been a Speech Language Pathologist at Child’s Voice School an Auditory Oral Moog Curriculum School since 2007 working with students in Early Intervention and the School Program. Brandi graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences and received a Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology from Western Michigan University.
