An Introduction to Bone Conduction Implants
Bone conduction implants were first introduced in the 1970s. In 1996, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared the Baha device for use in adults with conductive and mixed hearing losses. In 1999, FDA cleared the Baha device for use in the pediatric population over the age of 5. In 2001, an option was introduced for children below the age of 5. Today’s technology has replaced the former bone conduction hearing aids and provided better access to sound as well as increase the comfort and cosmetic appeal for children that are not able to benefit from traditional aid conduction hearing aids. The information in this presentation will introduce the current devices, discuss candidacy, and teach basic user features of the devices. In addition, a current review of the literature will provide updated information that can be used as we counsel families.
- *Participants will be able to describe the pediatric indications for Baha usage. *Participants will be able to describe the parts of the Baha system. *Participants will be able to list pediatric cases where the Baha system yielded good clinical results.

Krissie Rigsby is a graduate of University of Tennessee and Vanderbilt University. Krissie holds a clinical doctorate and has worked at the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center since 2001. She focuses on pediatric and hearing aids and is the assistant coordinator of the pediatric clinic. She has presented locally and regionally.

Lisa Christensen is a pediatric audiologist at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. Dr. Christensen serves as the Coordinator of the Bone Anchored Implants Team. She is the current and founding president of the Arkansas Academy of Audiology and serves on the AAA State Network Committee for Region 8. She was a participant in the Inaugural Future Leaders of Audiology Conference sponsored by the American Academy of Audiology. She is the recipient of the 2008 Audiology Award for the Arkansas Speech-Language Hearing Association. Dr. Christensen is also a consultant for Cochlear Americas.
