We Are Not Defective: Deaf Parents' Views on Raising their Sons

Teresa and Tim Nold will share their perspectives on their lives as parents of 2 children. Tim was born into a hearing family, and attended and graduated from the SD School for the Deaf. Teresa was born into a Deaf family, and was mainstreamed and graduated from a public school. Tim and Teresa have 2 boys, one who is hearing and one who is Deaf-plus. Tim and Teresa will share their unique “parent perspectives” on decision making in the early years, family life, and working with doctors, therapists, teachers and administrators. They will share how their life experiences as Deaf individuals have influenced their perspectives. They will also suggest strategies professionals can use to develop positive and respectful relationships with parents who are Deaf. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask Tim and Teresa questions about their own life experiences and their thoughts about raising deaf children.

  • increase awareness/sensitivity to a perspective of Deaf parents of a Deaf-plus child and a hearing child
  • improve collaboration to better serve Deaf families who have children who are Deaf or hard of hearing
  • increase knowledge of unique needs of children who have additional disabilities
