The 2007 Position Statement of the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing recommends that children who are identified as Deaf or Hard of Hearing should have immediate access to high-quality technology. However, many insurance companies do not cover the expenses associated with hearing aids, placing a burden on families. Even with some states requiring insurance policies to cover hearing aids, many have challenging limitations, leaving the family to incur high out-of-pocket expenses.
To assist in providing immediate access to high-quality amplification, numerous programs and foundations have been established across the United States. According to a survey conducted by NCHAM in 2011, 26 states/territories were identified as having a hearing aid loaner bank for children. The Nebraska Children’s Hearing Aid Loaner Bank, known as HearU Nebraska, was established at the University of Nebraska in collaboration with the Nebraska EHDI program. To date, this program has provided hundreds of hearing aids, care kits, earmolds, and batteries at no cost to children across the state. In order to best serve the needs of families across the United States, programs such as HearU Nebraska should share and discuss the successes and challenges of establishing and managing a sustainable hearing aid assistance program. This presentation will focus on the dissemination of synergistic goals across the U.S.

Dr. Ray is an Associate Professor of Practice at the University of Nebraska. She manages the Hearing Aid Clinic at the Barkley Memorial Center and is the administrator of the Hearing Aid Banks of Nebraska. Her commitment to ensure children have accessibility to amplification, led her to establish the Nebraska Children's Hearing Aid Bank: HearU Nebraska in 2007. She is on the Board of the Nebraska Commission for the Hard of Hearing and a Member of the Nebraska EHDI Advisory Committee. Her passion for providing services for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing stems from her experience raising a deaf son.
