Without Borders: Using Tele-therapy to Expand Access

Each state EDHI Program seeks to provide every family with early diagnosis, amplification and qualified providers to meet their early intervention needs. Around the country we are faced with a shortage of qualified providers, especially in the area of aural habilitation. Internet-based service delivery offers the promise of extending limited resources to serve families in rural or underserved areas. St. Joseph Institute has been working with First Steps programs in Indiana and Missouri to develop tele-therapy services; therapy sessions delivered by a Listening and Spoken Language specialist or SLP to families in their home via broadband internet connections with the use of webcams. This presentation will examine the advantages and issues of establishing a tele-therapy program, offer considerations for state protocols, and give examples of effective service delivery.
