What Are Your Child’s Rights Outside the Classroom?
Can your child have full, meaningful participation in the Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts organizations; doctors’ appointments; extracurricular sports activities; or going to the movies? The answer is YES! Federal law protects the deaf or hard of hearing person’s right to equal access and effective communication in both public and private sectors. However, enforcement of these laws do not automatically happen. Every parent and child need to know their rights under federal disability rights laws in order to assert them. The best advocates for deaf children are their parents and themselves. Participants will walk away with a clear understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and also receive familiarity with other federal civil rights laws. The presentation will discuss how the laws apply to various instances, such as health care facilities, after-school programs, and movie theaters. In addition to parents, EHDI professionals are also encouraged to attend this workshop so they can add to their repertoire of knowledge to provide to parents in their states.

Zainab Alkebsi, Esq. is the Policy Counsel at the National Association of the Deaf (NAD). She is responsible for providing analysis, recommendations, and counsel to the NAD on policy issues affecting people who are deaf and hard of hearing. Prior to joining the NAD, she served as Deputy Director at the Maryland Governor's Office of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing where she coordinated the office's legislative and policy efforts. Licensed to practice law in Maryland, she is also a member of the American Bar Association and the Maryland State Bar Association. She received her J.D. from the University of Baltimore School of Law. She also has a B.A. in Political Science from University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).
