How to Support EHDI Information Systems: A Look at a New CDC Resource
EHDI Information Systems (EHDI-IS) serve as a key tool in how programs identify and provide services to deaf and hard of hearing children. However, developing, maintaining, and using an EHDI-IS can involve several challenges. With the introduction of a new EHDI Information Systems (EHDI-IS) technical guidance manual, the CDC EHDI Program is providing a tool that jurisdictions can use to help support the continued development and effective use of their EHDI-IS. This online manual discusses key topics and provides examples, points to consider, and references that will assist EHDI programs in maintaining and strengthening their collection and use of quality data to ensure all infants receive recommended screening and follow-up services. It will also provide information about how programs can use available data to drive programmatic decisions. Specific topics addressed in this manual include data reporting and analysis, tracking and surveillance, using and disseminating data, ways to conduct planning and evaluation activities, privacy and confidentiality considerations, and the role of health information technology and interoperability.
This presentation is designed to introduce the new CDC online manual to program coordinators and interested stakeholders and will highlight how both new and experienced EHDI Coordinators can benefit from using this manual. The CDC EHDI Program continues to actively support jurisdictions in their efforts to ensure that deaf and hard of hearing infants are identified early and receive services and this technical manual is the newest tool available from CDC to assist programs in their efforts.
- 1. The attendees will learn about the new EHDI Information Systems: A Technical Guidance Manual and its applicability to their program’s efforts to develop and enhance their EHDI Information System (EHDI-IS).
- 2. The attendees will learn about some of the ways CDC EHDI is providing technical assistance to jurisdictional EHDI programs to establish and enhance an effective EHDI-IS.
- 3. The attendees will learn about the EHDI-IS functional standards that should guide the further development of their EHDI-IS.

Eric Cahill

Eric Cahill, MS has been with the CDC EHDI Team since 2009. As a Health Scientist, Eric provides technical assistance to state EHDI programs and investigates public health related issues for the team. Before coming to CDC, Eric served in the EHDI program for the state of Kentucky. He originally trained as a clinical audiologist and has worked at Temple University Hospital, Temple University Children’s Medical Center and Children’s Hospital Boston.

Marcus Gaffney is a Health Scientist and serves as the lead for the CDC EHDI Team. He has over 14 years’ experience working in the area of newborn hearing screening and is responsible for overseeing a range of activities, including supporting the development of jurisdictional EHDI Information Systems, assessing progress towards national goals, providing technical assistance, and supporting research efforts. He holds a Masters of Public Health from Mercer University.
