Shocking Discoveries in the EHDI World! What Quality Assurance Can Do For You
Quality assurance is the maintenance of a desired level of quality in a service by means of attention to every stage of the process. How often is your program paying attention? In our very busy, overloaded work days, what time is set aside for quality assurance? With so much emphasis on quality improvement lately has quality assurance taken a back seat?
The Joint Commission on Infant Hearing position statement (2007) asserts, “Examining the systems in place and ensuring quality care…is necessary to improve outcomes.” Quality Assurance is a pre-cursor to Quality Improvement. You may think you know what needs improving but until you invest the time digging deep and discovering what does, your QI may not get to the root of the problem. Does your data truly represent what you think it does? How accurate is it really? These answers may surprise (and shock!) you.
In addition to analyzing for data entry errors, quality assurance also confirms (or denies!) adherence to best practice protocols. “We have knowledge of what Best Practice is “, but in 2015 the Utah EHDI Program asked of its hospitals, midwives, and screeners, “but are we following it, and are we documenting it?” Come on our journey as we discover trends in data error entry, training, screening and diagnostic protocols that form the foundation for our quality improvement initiatives – and can help you form yours.

Shannon Wnek

Dr. Wnek is the Utah Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Audiology Coordinator, responsible for providing audiological and programmatic support to birthing facilities, hospital audiologists and midwives across the state. In addition, she regularly completes Quality Assurance activities and is considered the “Utah EHDI Compliance Officer”. Clinically, Dr. Wnek graduated with her Doctor of Audiology from the University of Utah in 2009 and is a pediatric audiologist at the Utah Department of Health Children with Special Healthcare Needs Bureau,. She is a graduate of the URLEND (Utah Regional Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities) program with a special emphasis on Infant and Pediatric Audiology. Her interests include early identification of hearing loss and supporting families of children with special healthcare needs.

Stephanie Browning McVicar

Dr. McVicar is the Director of the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program, the Children’s Hearing Aid Program, and the Cytomegalovirus Public Health Initiative in Utah. She is Program Manager in the Utah Department of Health's Children with Special Health Care Needs Bureau in Salt Lake City. She is the Audiology Core Faculty member and Director of the Infant-Pediatric Audiology Program for the URLEND (Utah Regional Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities) Program, training future leaders in transdisciplinary family-centered care of children and adolescents with special healthcare needs. Clinically, Dr. McVicar is a pediatric audiologist. She is originally from Western New York and has over two decades of experience and knowledge in Audiology and the management of health care programs in both the public and private sectors. Dr. McVicar serves on the Board of Ethics in Audiology for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
