Building Listening and Spoken Language: It's a 'Piece of Cake'
Best practice in EHDI services dictates that families of newly diagnosed children with hearing loss learn about all communication modalities and methodologies prior to beginning early intervention services. One option available to families is Auditory-Verbal Therapy, a type of Listening and Spoken Language therapy. However, there remains much confusion and misinterpretation among EHDI professionals and the general public about the principles and practices of Auditory-Verbal Therapy (AVT). This presentation will help to inform service coordinators, service providers, and families about the basics of developing listening and spoken language through an Auditory-Verbal approach. The presentation will begin with an overview of the principles and practices of AVT and will continue with a discussion of myths and facts about AVT. It will conclude with a discussion of “building a layer cake” as a metaphor for listening and spoken language development. Participants will learn that the foundation layer for listening and spoken language is strong auditory skills on top of which all other skills (receptive language, expressive language, articulation, and literacy) are built.

Alison Tucker is a certified LSLS Auditory-Verbal Therapist and has worked at the Auditory-Verbal Center, Inc. in Atlanta for the past 15 years. She is also the parent of a profoundly deaf bilaterally implanted teenager who completed the Center's AV program in 1999. Prior to working at the Auditory-Verbal Center, Alison worked as an SLP in a variety of school and early intervention settings.

Jennifer Wallace is a Speech-Language Pathologist and LSLS Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist working at the Auditory-Verbal Center in Atlanta, Georgia. She has over 9 years experience working with children with hearing loss and their families to develop listening and spoken language. She has worked in private practice, school settings, and hospital cochlear implant programs in North Carolina, Maryland, and Georgia.
