Jump Start Your ASL

Whether you are a parent, a service provider, an audiologist, speech pathologist, physician, educator, and even a state or national director, you or your service program will benefit from this presentation on American Sign Language, ASL. A critical component of Early Intervention is the presentation of language opportunities. The purpose of this presentation is to give parents and professionals, whose first language is not ASL, a unique opportunity to Jump Start their way into ASL or build upon their current knowledge base of visual language. The goal of this presentation is not only to introduce participants to basic and essential ASL signs and skills, but to cover tips for parents and professionals, language milestones, Deaf culture and community information, and introduce steps in networking with Deaf professionals, mentors, organizations, and other parents.

  • 1. Distinguish characteristics of ASL. 2. Identify visual language milestones. 3. Recognize essential visual language skills and methods to build upon those skills. 4. Acquire information to build support systems and networks for families and professionals.
