Communicating about Communication Options
After a child has been identified as having a hearing loss, parents have many decisions to make. Beyond optimal amplification and exploring cochlear implantation, what can parents do to ensure that spoken language is made accessible and meaningful? While implants can improve access to auditory information, language development can be compromised because implants do not deliver the full broadband speech signal, and because language exposure is occurring in the noise of the real-world environment. How can we ensure complete access to the elements of spoken communication that will facilitate language development at home, and eventually literacy and academic success?
This session will aid professionals and parents in understanding how the use of visual information can fill in the gaps in the auditory signal and support spoken language acquisition. Cued Speech, often overlooked, has been shown to be an excellent vehicle for conveying the elements of spoken language necessary for high-level language proficiency. We will explore the links spoken language and literacy, and examine the rationale and evidence base for incorporating cueing into auditory language learning. Cued Speech will also be compared with other visual phonemic strategies. In addition, an important theme will be how we talk with parents about factors to consider with communication options, and best practices for ensuring language success. Information resources will be included.

CATHY QUENIN, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is a Professor and Chair in the
Communication Sciences and Disorders Department at Nazareth College of
Rochester. She is also Co-Director of the federally-funded Deafness Specialty
Preparation program conducted jointly by Nazareth and the National Technical
Institute for the Deaf. Interim President of the National Cued Speech
Association, she is a certified instructor of Cued Speech and trainer of
instructors. She has presented numerous times for local, statewide, and national audiences, and has taught cueing and its applications for both hearing and deaf individuals for more than 20 years.
