Family Signs Program:Remote Video Sign Language Instruction via Skype and ooVoo

One of the crucial needs of early intervention for deaf and hard of hearing children is early communication. For those for whom visual language provides the most readily accessible information, early exposure to sign language can maximize the potential for language development and minimize the pervasive and long term effects of language delay. Early education providers are often strapped to provide a high level of service in this area because of funding issues, lack of sufficient or qualified personnel, and time constraints. Several years ago the Educational Resource Center on Deafness at Texas School for the Deaf attempted to fill this gap through an innovative program providing in home instruction through the use of videophones. Funding for this program ran out and at the suggestion of an audience member at a presentation on this topic at EDHI 2009, the program was reconfigured using Skype and ooVoo. This presentation will describe the new platform for remote sign instruction with emphasis on program components, instructors, technology used, evaluations, continuous improvement, and ongoing challenges.

Lynn Reichert received her MA in Deafness Studies in Austin, Texas. She is a certified Deaf Education teacher, ASL teacher, and Interpreter. After working in the Deaf education field for over 12 years in a variety of settings, she began working with the Educational Resource Center on Deafness (ERCOD) and the Family Signs program. She has been with the Family Signs program for five years, four of those as Coordinator. Most recently, she co-authored ‘Pioneering Program Teaches Families Sign Language Through Tele-Intervention’ based on Family Signs in The Odyssey, 2015.
