The Waiting Period: Strategies for Parents as they Prepare their Child for Cochlear Implants
Learning that your child is a candidate for a cochlear implant can be an emotional moment as there are many decisions to make. As a result of early identification and intervention families often learn that their child qualifies for cochlear implantation but that the surgery can not occur until the child has reached 12 months and/or insurance approval has been received. This waiting period can be difficult on the families. Families question what they can do to help support their child in the home during this transition period. This presentation will provide families with strategies and resources that can be accessed as their child waits to receive cochlear implants. Some of the strategies include continued use of the hearing aids, implementation of listening and language principles at home, initiation of therapy services and activities that can be used develop pre-listening and language skills. Discussion will focus on the importance of using this timeframe to initiate services and resources that will assist the child once the cochlear implants have been activated. A review of the process to receiving a cochlear implant will be discussed. The information presented is invaluable to parents as it provides them with education, strategies, and the support they need to feel a part of the process of teaching their child to hear with cochlear implants.
- 1. Following the completion of this course the participant will be able to list resources to support a young child in the home as they await access to sound with cochlear implants. 2. Following the completion of this course the participant will be able to identify strategies to implement with their child at home. 3. Following the completion of this course the participant will be able to describe the stages to receiving cochlear implants.

Carissa Moeggenberg completed both a Bachelor’s of Science (1991) and a Master’s of Audiology (1992) from Central Michigan University. Upon completing these degrees she joined the University of Michigan’s Cochlear Implant team where she served as a pediatric audiologist for over 10 years. Following her passion for cochlear implants and rehabilitation of children and adults with a severe to profound hearing loss she joined Advanced Bionics in 2002. Presently she is the Manager of Education, Training and Rehabilitation in which she develops resources and education programs and resources developed for children and adult with hearing loss. She is also working on her Doctorate of Audiology degree through Central Michigan University’s Distance Learning Program. Carissa has co-authored several publications on cochlear implantation and has presented nationally on cochlear implantation and aural rehabilitation. She lives in Michigan with her husband and 2 children.
