Early Intervention's Long Term Language Planning Impact
Commonly overlooked by professionals in the field of early intervention working with deaf/hard of hearing children is the long term impact of language planning. How does language planning via selection of language for deaf/hard of hearing children impact their transition and economic potential? It has been increasingly acknowledged that deafness does not cause a language delay. Poor outcomes of language planning choices lead to language delays. Economic data from the Federal Department of Labor and other sources will be discussed. Graduation rates and college attendance and success rates will be explored. The impact of early intervention on preparing deaf/hard of hearing children to acquire language on par with their hearing peers so they can be prepared to participate in our global market will be explored along with a discussion of appropriate language planning and monitoring techniques.
- 1) Participants will understand the impact of early language planning decision on long term academic and employment outcomes in deaf/hard of hearing children. 2) Participants will understand the importance of including ongoing language development monitoring in early intervention.
