What We Have Learned About Home Visits in Two Countries: Insights from Early Interventionists
In 2006 the HI HOPES programme in South Africa was born. HI HOPES is the 1st organised home-based early intervention programme in SA for children who are deaf and hard of hearing and their families. The programme is based on the SKI HI model for early intervention which began in 1971. Over the past 4 years our teams from SA and the US have learned a great deal about establishing and developing an early intervention programme in a country where early intervention is not even a recognised profession.
We will discuss some of the things we have learned from doing home visits in 2 different countries on two different continents, and insights shared could provide a template for any programme facing cultural and linguistic challenges.

Paula Pittman has been involved in the education of children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families for 30 years. She was one of the developers of the original Deaf Mentor Program at the SKI-HI Institute and is the director of outreach for the SKI-HI and Deaf Mentor Programs. She is currently the director of the Utah Parent Infant Program at the Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind and serves families in that program as a Parent Advisor as well.

Claudine Storbeck

Dr. Storbeck is the Director of the HI HOPES early intervention program in Johannesburg, South Africa. She created the Centre for Deaf Studies 11 years ago at the University of the Witswatersrand to better equip teachers of the deaf or hard of hearing to work in a classroom setting and meet the needs of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. She currently directs the HI HOPES Program, a home-based early intervention program for South Africa, works as a Parent Advisor in this program, and remains the director of the Centre for Deaf Studies at the University of the Witswatersrand.
