Consanguinity and Deafness in Oman
Consanguinity refers to marriages between individuals who share at least one common ancestor and is conventionally applied to persons related as first cousins, second cousins, or relations even of the same tribe. The rate of consanguinity in the general Omani population has been shown to be around 55%.
This presentation describes a retrospective analysis of 1400 forms on the causes of deafness in Omani children, collected from 1986 to 2000. About 70% of the patients were from parents of consanguineous marriages and 30% from non-consanguineous unions. From the consanguineous parents 70.16% were first-cousins marriages, 17.54% were related (second degree cousins), and 10.86% or were marriages from the same tribe.
About 45% had other members in their family affected. Of these, 29.7% were. from consanguineous marriages, and 15.3% were from non-consanguineous marriages. Just over (67.8% or 30.51% of the total) had family members (deaf siblings) affected.
We can conclude that higher rate of consanguinity among the deaf (and most probably other congenital causes) in Oman is most likely responsible for the occurrence of deafness in the community.
