Genetics of Deafness and Population Migration

Deafness has many genes up till now more than 30 have been identified and many are being discovered. Many genes have founder effects. The most popular group of genes in the West are the genes affecting the Connexin proteins (GJB 2-3&6). Much research has been done on these genes, and tests can screen deaf children for their presence. In Oman, we have been collecting DNA from deaf families since 1992. Much laboratory work on our DNA has been done in Oman and in other international reference labs. In this presentation, we present our results and research to show what genes we have discovered and discuss why we have not found the Connexin gene in our population.

  • Different genes cause deafness in different countries.
  • How to detect deafness causing genes in your region.
  • Laboratory work for gene detection.
