Audiology 101 – Introduction to Audiology for Non-audiologists Working in and Supporting EHDI activities
The vast majority of people working in and supporting EHDI programs and activities are not audiologists and do not have a working knowledge of the audiology concepts and terminology used in EHDI and early childhood hearing screening programs and activities. This presentation will present the basic audiology concepts and terminology needed to work effectively in EHDI programs, as well as for parents in understanding hearing loss and in navigating the intervention and habilitation process. Specific topics include definitions and basic principles regarding hearing loss, diagnosis and assessment, and intervention. This presentation will include: demonstration of hearing loss and descriptive terminology, how hearing loss is assessed and diagnosed, the types of treatment and intervention for hearing loss, how audiologists monitor and manage hearing loss, important aspects of hearing and hearing loss, and how to work with audiologists.

Jeff Hoffman is the former Outreach Coordinator for the Early Childhood Hearing Outreach (ECHO) Initiative at NCHAM, Utah State University. Jeff has many years of experience serving as a state EHDI coordinator and working within Head Start. As an audiologist, Jeff's combined experience affords him to be a valuable resource to state EHDI programs and Head Start grantees as they build collaborations to support quality hearing screening and follow-up practices.

Terry Foust, Au.D., CCC-A/SLP, is a consulting pediatric audiologist and speech-language pathologist with the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM). He serves as one of the NCHAM EHDI national network audiologists and as an audiology consultant to the Hearing Head Start ECHO Project with NCHAM. He also provides consultation for MCHB, HRSA and the Office of Performance Review. He is the administrator for Intermountain Healthcare's Community and School Clinics which are healthcare facilities dedicated to serving the low income, uninsured and homeless populations.
