Using New Web-based Hearing Screening Instructional Modules to Connect with Early Childhood Programs and Identify Infants and Toddlers with Hearing Loss
As periodic hearing screening in early childhood programs continues to expand nationwide, EHDI programs and local audiologists are experiencing increased opportunities and responsibilities for helping these programs meet their planning, training and technical assistance needs so that children with late onset losses, and infants lost to follow-up/documentation from newborn screening, can be identified and served. There are more than 1000 Early Head Start programs across the nation, all of which are being encouraged to learn to conduct OAE screening with the 0-3 year old children they serve. Additionally, there are over 3000 Parents as Teachers home visitation programs operating under the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program who are required to adopt OAE screening and follow-up practices.
Building on a decade of experience in supporting Early Head Start programs establish OAE screening and follow-up practices, NCHAM’s Early Childhood Hearing Outreach (ECHO) Initiative has developed a new set of web-based instructional modules to enhance the ease and effectiveness with which EHDI program staff and audiologists can assist early childhood programs to adopt and maintain effective OAE screening and follow-up practices. This presentation will introduce participants to the new resources, illustrate how they can be used by EHDI programs and audiologists in a variety of settings to establish mutually beneficial, collaborative relationships with early childhood education providers in their states. Come learn about this new set of free resources that will help you be a part of the ECHO!
- At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to identify early childhood programs in their state that are adopting Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) hearing screening practices and how to access a new set of web-based instructional modules and resources to help plan for, implement and evaluate these programs.
- Participants will be able to access to tools that they can use to connect with early childhood educators to facilitate effective screening practices for identifying children with late-onset losses and infants lost to follow-up/documentation from newborn hearing screening.

Dr. William Eiserman is the Director of Early Childhood Projects and the Early Childhood Hearing Outreach (ECHO) Initiative at the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM), Utah State University. Dr. Eiserman's background includes program evaluation, instructional design, project management, and training.

Terry Foust

Terry Foust, AuD., has implemented and directed large newborn hearing screening programs in Utah and Idaho. He has provided consultation services to the Maternal Child Health Bureau (MCHB), the HRSA Office of Performance Review (OPR), the Medicaid and Medicare Policy Research Center and the NCHAM. He is a National Technical Assistance Network audiologist for NCHAM providing support to state EHDI programs and the Early Childhood Hearing Outreach program.
International experience includes work and consultation in Accra (Ghana Africa), Costa Rica, Cairo Egypt, and most recently in Mumbai India.
Professional honors include being the first recipient of the newly established Mary J. Webster Distinguished Service Award from the Utah Speech-Language and Hearing Association, recognition by Utah Business Magazine as the 2007 Healthcare Hero of the year as an administrator, the 2006 recipient of the national Larry H. Mauldin award for excellence in audiology education and other honors.

Jeff Hoffman is the former Outreach Coordinator for the Early Childhood Hearing Outreach (ECHO) Initiative at NCHAM, Utah State University. Jeff has many years of experience serving as a state EHDI coordinator and working within Head Start. As an audiologist, Jeff's combined experience affords him to be a valuable resource to state EHDI programs and Head Start grantees as they build collaborations to support quality hearing screening and follow-up practices.
