Tracking and Follow-up: Current Progress and Efforts to Improve National Data
Through the successful implementation of state-based Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programs, over 95% of U.S infants are now screened for hearing loss. While programs at the local, state, and federal levels routinely collect data at each stage of the EHDI process, there are often differences in the completeness of this information and how it is analyzed and reported. This has complicated efforts to ensure that all infants receive recommended follow-up services and assess actual progress towards national goals, such as reducing how many infants are lost to follow-up at different stages of the EHDI process. To better assess recent progress the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is actively collaborating with jurisdictional EHDI programs and other partners to help advance the collection and analysis of hearing screening and follow-up data. During this presentation the key challenges related to data collection and analyses will be highlighted along with a summary of recent progress in efforts to identify and provide services to deaf and hard of hearing infants. In addition, ongoing collaborative efforts on ways to improve the collection and reporting of loss to follow-up data so that it better reflects national progress will be discussed.

Marcus Gaffney is a Health Scientist and serves as the lead for the CDC EHDI Team. He has over 14 years’ experience working in the area of newborn hearing screening and is responsible for overseeing a range of activities, including supporting the development of jurisdictional EHDI Information Systems, assessing progress towards national goals, providing technical assistance, and supporting research efforts. He holds a Masters of Public Health from Mercer University.
