The Impact of Emerging Technologies on Families: Considerations in real life
We are the sacred holders of two ideas for families; the miracle of technology and the limitations of technology. Technology is amazing. It can be helpful and provide so many opportunities for our deaf and hard of hearing children. There is also a realistic side to using technology that our professionals are sometimes not aware of. While a majority of children are very successful using technology there are limitations that are not always considered and there can be an impact to the family that includes emotional expectations and hopes, financial considerations, and the inability to see the need for technology.
This session, presented by two parents of children who are deaf and hard of hearing, will explore the considerations that contribute to the impact of technology in the real world. The session will also explore ways in which our deaf and hard of hearing children are using technology and how they are using technology academically and socially to stay connected. Finally, the session will also explore strategies that enhance partnerships with families in technology decision-making and use.

Helen is the parent of two deaf children. Through her years advocating for her girls and using technology, she has become quite versed on the realities of being a hearing parent raising two deaf children. In her role with Hands & Voices in Oregon and with HQ, she has had the privilege of speaking with, and learning from hundreds of families and professionals across the country. Providing the resources for our deaf and hard of children to achieve their personal successes is paramount to Helen.

Terri Patterson is the Director of Chapter Support for Hands & Voices, Coordinator of the H&V Leadership-to-Leadership (L2L) Program, and a member of the core management team for Hands & Voices Family Leadership in Language and Learning (FL3) Center. Her passion stems from her family, specifically her son who was born profoundly deaf in 1999. Through her personal experiences raising, supporting and advocating for her son, as well as navigating the systems that support children who are D/HH, she provides perspective, herself, as a hard of hearing adult. Her leadership skills continue to grow as she trains and provides technical assistance to over 50 Hands & Voices Chapters and efforts across North America through one-on-one training, leadership development, state and national conference presentations and national organizational engagement with NAD, NCDB, HRSA.
