Standardized Site Visits: Collaborating with Hospitals, Audiologists and/or Family Support
Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programs have utilized a variety of approaches
to work with hospital Newborn Hearing Screening (NBHS) programs and pediatric audiology practices over the years. Face-to-face, on-site visits have been reported as most effective, but not always feasible. Barriers to face-to-face site visits vary from cost and time to restrictions due to the recent pandemic.
Site visits provide a framework for creating a collaborative ongoing partnership between EHDI
programs and hospitals and audiologists to work together toward the common goal of providing the highest standard of care in newborn hearing screening and follow-up. Due to the importance of routine site visits and in light of the COVID-19 Pandemic, fiscal and/ or travel restrictions, the Virtual Hospital Site Visit (VSV) Project was created.
During this session, several states will report on their experiences with both face-to-face and virtual site visits with hospital newborn hearing screening programs and/or pediatric audiology practices. Resources such as email templates, compliance guides, rubrics, data reports, adapted virtual site visit curricula, and site visit reports will be provided for all attendees. Presentation will be followed by facilitated discussion in small groups to allow for additional sharing.

Dr. Fort is the Genetics and Newborn Screening Unit Manager in the Whole Child Health Section of the North Carolina Division of Child and Family Well-Being and serves as the NC EHDI Coordinator. Marcia has worked with the NC EHDI program since 2002. Dr. Fort has 32 years of experience as a pediatric audiologist in hospital, private practice, ENT office and public school settings.

Tammy O'Hollearn

Tammy O'Hollearn has been the EHDI Director for Iowa for the last 15 years. She has worked at the Iowa Department of Public Health since 2001. Ms. O’Hollearn provides administrative oversight, budget management, oversees surveillance of the newborn hearing screening and follow-up data base, as well facilitates the day-to-day management of activities to meet program goals. Ms. O’Hollearn works with many stakeholders in the community that assists Iowa EHDI in meeting program goals and strengthen the system of care for Deaf or hard-of-hearing infants. She directs data design, collection, program analyses and evaluation of the EHDI SOC. She serves on many state and national committees and facilitates the Iowa EHDI Advisory Committee. Tammy received a Link Associates Dorothy Schwartz Award in 1993 and ISHA Outstanding Service Award in 2009 and in 2016, the Iowa EHDI program received the EHDI Website of the Year Award.

Suzanne Foley

Dr. Suzanne Foley is a practicing pediatric audiologist who is also the director of Indiana EHDI. She has provided pediatric audiology services for over 20 years.Previously, she was a regional audiology consultant for Indiana EHDI and has been the director for two years. She is a national speaker for the Bureau of Education and Research and provides training seminars to school based personnel and has been an adjunct professor and mentors graduate students in audiology.

Arlene Stredler-Brown

Arlene Stredler-Brown, PhD, CCC-SLP provides consultation and technical assistance to programs working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing in the United States and internationally. She has graduate degrees in Speech/Language Pathology, Education of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing, and a doctoral degree in Special Education. Her recent research focuses on telehealth and the use of coaching strategies in the delivery of family-centered early intervention. Having worked many years in program administration and policy development, Dr. Stredler-Brown brings this skill set to her role as Director of the Colorado Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program. Common themes guiding her work are: inclusiveness, collaboration, evidence-based practice and a commitment to infants and toddlers who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families.
