Receipt and Timeliness of Newborn Hearing Screening and Follow-up Services Among Babies Born in 2020 in 37 States
CDC has been supporting jurisdictional EHDI programs by providing funding and technical assistance to facilitate the collection of newborn hearing screening, diagnosis, and early intervention information since 2000. In 2020 the CDC rolled out the individual-level data reporting model to 39 jurisdictions through a 4-year cooperative agreement project. CDC received the first and second datasets from each awardee in October 2021 and May 2022, respectively. These datasets provide the opportunity to examine the timeliness of key events in the EHDI process from birth through enrollment into early intervention services among different populations in much greater detail. In this presentation, we will summarize results of data analyses conducted on the individual-level datasets reported by jurisdictions in May 2022 on babies born in 2020. We will focus on the receipt and timeliness of EHDI services among babies born in 2020. We will also look at the demographics of those infants in need for follow-up services, to identify populations EHDI programs and partners should consider targeting to improve equity in EHDI service provision.
Preliminary findings show that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, timely completion of the newborn hearing screening was achieved by most of the population (97%) among the included jurisdictions. However, preliminary findings indicate that receipt and timeliness of diagnostic evaluation among babies not passing the hearing screen were lower than in recent years potentially due to the COVID-19 pandemic and enrollment into intervention services among babies confirmed with permanent hearing loss seem to remain same as recent years. Possible explanations for the findings will be discussed. More work is needed to increase receipt and timeliness of infants getting important follow-up services, to minimize risk of developmental delays. Future collaborative opportunities to improve the efficiency of the data-reporting process and use of the data will also be discussed during the presentation.

She has a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Engineering. Her interest in public health informatics include data integration, data standard, EHR, and system evaluation.

Suhana Ema serves as an epidemiologist with the CDC EHDI Team. She is responsible for analyzing EHDI data and disseminating findings with jurisdictional EHDI programs and partners. She also provides technical assistance to jurisdictional EHDI programs to improve their program and tracking and surveillance work. She holds Master of Public Health degree from the University of Georgia. Suhana was born with severe to profound hearing loss on both ears and wears hearing aids. She is fluent in American Sign Language and lipreads well.
