An Introduction to ADA, 504, and the IDEA: What Families Need to Know

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 504), and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) are the primary laws relating to access and services for deaf and hard of hearing children. This workshop will provide an introduction to these laws and how they apply to deaf and hard of hearing children, as well as information about resources available to families and professionals. A particular focus of the workshop will be the transition process from the Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) to the Individualized Education Program (IEP) as a child approaches age three and the changes in the associated rights and responsibilities under the IDEA. At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to analyze commonly-faced situations and identify strategies to advocate for deaf and hard of hearing children.

  • Participants will be able to identify the main protections under the ADA, 504, and the IDEA for DHH children.
  • Participants will be able to identify situations that implicate the ADA, 504, and/or the IDEA for DHH children.
  • Participants will be able to name resources for questions regarding the ADA, 504, and the IDEA for DHH children.
