EHDI Websites Review: Where Are We Now and Where Do We Go?
In 2021, American Cochlear Implant Alliance conducted a review of state EHDI websites focused on four areas: hearing loss information, hearing technology, communication options, and resources. The findings were presented at the 2022 EHDI conference and at CI2022 (ACI Alliance) conference. A paper will be published in a forthcoming edition of the Journal on Early Hearing and Intervention. This presentation will focus on what changes have been made in state EHDI websites since August 2021 and provide guidance on support and for continued improvement of website information.
State Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) websites are an important opportunity for families seeking information on options for their children who have been identified as deaf or hard of hearing. The Web provides an opportunity to support families that can be easily updated, widely disseminated, and offered in various formats.
The 2017 EHDI legislation states that “Information provided to families should be accurate, comprehensive, up-to-date, and evidence-based, as appropriate, to allow families to make important decisions for their children in a timely manner, including decisions with respect to the full range of assistive hearing technologies and communications modalities, as appropriate.” Parents need timely information to make informed decisions regarding the early needs of their children with hearing loss. The 2021 ACI Alliance Review found that while some states utilized their EHDI website to effectively provide information to parents, most sites fell short.
Attendees will benefit from greater understanding of the importance of web-based information, what improvements were made and are still needed, and how their state website compares. Suggestions will be made on how to support improvements over the coming years. The presentation will also discuss any possible impacts on website requirements if the 2022 EHDI legislation has been approved at the time of the EHDI conference.
- Identify opportunities to improve the information provided to families via the state EHDI Website.
- Explore the ways other states have addressed and/or improved information provision and parent interactions via the Internet.
- Understand the importance of unbiased, comprehensive information on websites have in supporting families and the need to advocate for improvements.

Nichole Westin MA has been the Director of Government Affairs at the ACI Alliance since 2018. She has worked in advocacy since 1998 when she began her career working for the U.S. Senate. Ms. Westin has successfully managed policy campaigns at both the federal and state levels on issues ranging from export sales to payroll taxes to school nutrition. Since joining ACI Alliance, Ms. Westin has worked on a variety of parent support issue and provided one on one support on complicated insurance questions. She also leads the two advocacy networks, including CI CAN which is devoted solely to sharing the experiences of consumers and families. Ms. Westin enjoys using her experience within the federal government and other non-profits to educate people on being effective advocates for their priority policy issues.
