Transition from EI to PK in Colorado

Transitioning from Early Intervention (EI) services to preschool is a time of huge change for families where they are used to direct contact with the professionals supporting their child to the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and their child beginning to receive their services in the school setting, away from the family. During this transition, families will look to the professionals supporting them in EI and who they are familiar with on what to expect from it. Some professionals in EI have worked in the school systems before, but many have not. This presentation will be a combination of personal experiences of a professional who has experience in both EI and school systems and incorporation of laws and regulations that are in place to provide information for professionals of what to expect from the evaluation for an IEP and establishing an IEP for a child with a hearing difference. These experiences have been gained in Colorado, but many concepts can be applied to other states. Families are often going through this transition for the first time with their child with a hearing difference. The presentation will review what questions families often have about the process, what to expect in the initial meetings with the school districts, what families can expect from the evaluation, and what are key concepts to discuss during the IEP meetings specifically for children with hearing differences.

  • The attendees will apply ideas of how to support families through the transition process.
  • The attendees will list 3 key concepts to review with families through the transition to preschool process.
  • The attendees will show what to expect with the transition process.

Presenter: Renae Cuevas Dias

Renae Cuevas Dias is a third year Doctoral student in Inclusive Early Childhood Education program at CU Denver and a Speech-Language Pathologist working in Early Intervention. For the last 6 years she has worked in Early Intervention, specifically focusing on working with children with vision and/or hearing differences, many of which require Alternative, Augmentative, Communication to communicate.
