Additional Supports for Deaf Plus Families

Perspective from a parent professional on what additional supports are available to families with infants who are deaf or hard of hearing with additional medical or developmental needs. I cannot forget the shock on some of the faces of medical, therapeutic and educational providers for my daughter in her first years. I quickly began hiding our needs so as not to overwhelm her providers. Now, as a Parent Guide with Nevada Hands & Voices, I work hard to make sure that no family ever hides the reality of their challenges. What can providers do to allow families to be authentic? What additional supports are available to early intervention and medical teams to support families in their journey? I will share some resources that have helped our family and make suggestions on how to be sensitive towards families with medically complex infants.

  • Participants will be able to describe 2 unique needs of families with infants who have medical needs
  • Participants will be able to identify 3 sources of support for families of infants who are Deaf Plus
  • Participants will be able to locate 2 state/local providers of diagnosis specific support for families.
