Can My Child Use Signing Exact English?

This presentation will be a source of information for parents regarding Signing Exact English as a communication option for their child. We will begin by defining Signing Exact English and explaining how it falls in the continuum of options. Then we will cover benefits of using this approach, as well as how it integrates with users of ASL and listening and spoken language. Finally, we will give examples of how Signing Exact English connects to literacy.

  • To discern Signing Exact English from other systems.
  • To explain the benefits of using Signing Exact English with Deaf/hard of hearing children.
  • Be able to give examples of how Signing Exact English connects with literacy development.

Sheila has been teaching in Deaf education for 10 years in many educational settings with a variety of communication models and believes strongly in equal access to every model for every family. She has her BA and MA in Deaf Education, her professional certification in cochlear implants, and has published research on communication mode with her colleague Dr. Matthew Hall.
