"The Health Resources and Services Administration defines health disparities as the inequalities that occur in the provision of healthcare and access to healthcare across different racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. In the United States, health disparities are a well-known problem among ethnic minorities such as African Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, and Latinos" https://www.news-medical.net/health/What-are-Health-Disparities.aspx According to the U. S. Government Accountability Office, (2020) disparities have been identified among White and persons of color, regarding access to health care. Studies have shown that "non-Hispanic Black mothers were more than three times more likely to die during childbirth than non-Hispanic White mothers." The factors related to the deaths include systemic factors like access to care, patient and provider factors, lack of knowledge of warning signs, and missing and delayed diagnoses https://www.gao.gov/blog/racial-disparities-health-care-and-role-government. In a focus group study, Chinese- and Spanish-speaking participants perceived that they were treated wrongly because of their lack of clear English. They concluded that they were treated differently because healthcare providers perceived ethnicity variance and the quality of healthcare was lower https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK220347/. Equity is a principle that relates to the civil liberties of humans, especially populations standing at social disadvantages. Equity in healthcare should be predicated on providers' ability to deliver adequate healthcare to all, regardless of ethnicity.
