Take Two: Embedding LSL Strategies Throughout the Day

Parents and caregivers participate in ongoing family sessions with an early intervention provider targeting skill development for their child. A parent’s commitment to participation in early intervention requires time dedicated to sessions with the provider as well as time between sessions to practice the targeted strategies. This presentation will generate examples of how to provide parents with ideas for carryover of listening and spoken language (LSL) strategies engaging their child in learning opportunities throughout the day. As a provider coaches a family through observation and practice of LSL strategies, the family will begin using the strategies. Parents are a child’s first teacher of language. It is important that these interactions are not an isolated activity a few times a month but instead are embedded into the child’s interactions throughout everyday activities. A child’s knowledge is acquired indirectly through daily interactions with adults, siblings, and peers that occur through conversation around routines, games, nursery rhymes, songs, and reading activity (Burns, Griffin & Snow, 1999, Landry& Smith, 2006) It is critical for a family to understand the necessity of focusing on listening and language development and gains confidence in their role as their child’s teacher. Through a cooperative and collaborative relationship with the parent, the early intervention provider focusing on LSL can use the coaching model: joint planning, observation, action, reflection and feedback (Rush, Sheldon, 2011) to foster knowledge and mastery of LSL strategies. This presentation will include video observations featuring examples of a coaching model highlighting LSL strategies and listening, language, speech and vocabulary embedded into natural communication exchanges throughout the child’s day.

  • The participant will discuss the role of an early interventionist in planning and implementing family sessions using a coaching model.
  • The participant will explain listening and spoken language strategies targeting language development through listening
  • The participant will examine video demonstrations and generate ideas for carryover of the targeted strategy
