EI Beyond Borders: Tele-service post COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic was unprecedented in countless ways. Many jobs across professions, previously conducted in person, permanently changed to remote work. Prior to 2020, there were a select few early intervention programs for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children in the US that were regularly utilizing tele-practice services. When this occurred, this was often due to living a distance from a center based program where teachers of the Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing were based. According to the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing Position Statement of 2019, studies on tele-practice have been few and far between, and those that existed focused on adults with cochlear implants and other audiological services (JCHDI 2019, pg 29, P2). Once lockdown was in place in early spring of 2020, many programs, schools, and EI agencies quickly transitioned from in person services to tele-practice full-time. PA School for the Deaf, is a program that continues to offer virtual EI services for families who prefer this model, or as a hybrid option. This advance in technology has now provided an avenue for services to continue, whereas in the past families would have to suspend their education. Some obstacles may be: an ill family member, transportation being temporarily unavailable, inclement weather, the family is traveling, etc. What is the current impact of virtual EI education (including home visits, parent support groups, ASL classes/tutoring, Deaf mentoring) and in the future? In particular, we share how two families requested their weekly D/HH services to continue virtually while they were out of the country (on separate continents) for several weeks on visitation/vacation. Now is the time to collect data on children who are D/HH and receiving virtual EI services given there is a much larger sample size nationally and internationally.

Sarrea De Suza earned a B.S. in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology from New York University and a M.A. in Deaf Education from Gallaudet University. She began her career in Loudoun County, VA as a teacher of the Deaf in a center-based D/HH mainstream program and then as an itinerant. Sarrea is currently working at Pennsylvania School for the Deaf’s EI program, First Conversations. She works with families and their young children, ages birth-3, as a home based Early Intervention Teacher.
