Real Families, Real Stories, Real Support

Parents of children newly diagnosed as deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) experience a myriad of emotions and, for most, begin a journey into unfamiliar medical, audiological, and intervention services. They learn new terms and vocabulary and begin making important decisions within a relatively short period of time. Some parents experience a breadth of support from professionals, family members, and friends within their community. However, many families have described feelings of fear, isolation, loneliness, and confusion, particularly if no one close to them has had similar experiences. Having the opportunity to learn from other families of children who are DHH and know of their challenges and successes can be of great support and comfort. To help parents of newly identified children who are DHH to hear of the experiences of other families of children who are DHH, this proposed poster presentation will describe an ongoing project of collecting short video clips of conversations with families. This video compilation will provide meaningful insights into the lives of these families and can help those with newly identified children who are DHH to learn of others’ shared experiences and emotions. This poster project will describe and summarize the videos collected from families living in the Chicago area as well as support and resources available to all families. The final video compilation will include interviews with families from various parts of the country. A link to the final video project (completion date of May 2023) will be provided on the poster.

  • Parent participants will discuss the preliminary findings of video interviews collected from families living in the Chicago area.
  • Professional participants will discuss the value of making connections between newly identified families and experienced families with children who are deaf and hard of hearing.
  • Parent and professional participants will describe support resources to connect with other families from Advanced Bionics, MED-EL, and Cochlear Americas.
