Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) Digital Handbook

In many areas around the country, there are few early interventionists with knowledge about the listening and spoken language approach to early intervention services for children ages 0-5 who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). A question often asked by early interventionists, tasked with supporting families in the LSL approach is, “Where do I start?” Historically, these early interventionists have been sent to various websites, books, and articles to begin their journeys in learning about providing or supporting LSL intervention services. This process can be overwhelming for early interventionists, with no guarantee that the information they are finding is of high quality or actually results in carryover of effective intervention services for children who are DHH. By creating a digital handbook in the form of a Padlet, containing vetted resources, handouts, practical strategies, videos, assessments, and trainings, early intervention professionals can find the answer to their question of where to start. The LSL handbook Padlet provides quick hits of information all in one place; organized by topic, and readily accessible on a phone, iPad, laptop or other digital devices. Unlike a written resource document, this digital LSL handbook offers opportunities for continuous updates and additions as innovations in listening technology occur or new research presents more current strategies. This presentation will describe and demonstrate the digital LSL Handbook in the form of a Padlet and share ideas for utilization of the resources within the Padlet. Discussion will be encouraged regarding how to incorporate the Padlet into family centered practice and ideas investigated for the widespread sharing of this resource with early intervention professionals seeking a practical guide to supporting families using a listening and spoken language approach with children who are deaf or hard of hearing ages 0-5.

  • Participants will examine a Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) digital handbook in the form of a Padlet. Sections within the Padlet include such topics as: What is LSL? LSL Strategies, Auditory Skill Development, Family Centered Intervention, LSL and the IEP, LSL and the IFSP, and more.
  • Participants will discuss utilization of the resources within this digital LSL Handbook Padlet and compare/contrast it with how hard copy resource guides are used in the field.
  • Participants will identify ways in which to use the LSL Digital Handbook Padlet in family centered practice and how this resource can be widely shared with early interventionists in need of a practical, accessible resource guide.
