 Language, Linguistics, Learning & Lunch!

Food is a universal tool for bringing people together. When children have the opportunity to help make meals, for themselves and their family, they feel more included and are more engaged. Being part of food preparation can help promote both simple and complex language interactions, vocabulary development, math concepts, memory and sequencing, requesting or making choices, and so forth. Research has shown typically developing preschool children rapidly learn new language, primarily without explicit instruction. This learning is incidental and occurs within a child’s daily routines. Children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) can acquire knowledge incidentally, but also benefit from explicit language instruction, particularly when facilitated within natural routines and environments to promote more meaningful integration and generalization of skills. This presentation will 1) facilitate discussions with participants about engaging young children who are DHH in food preparation activities and the breadth of linguistic, academic, and social-emotional benefits, 2) provide a video example of making pizza with young children to illustrate fun engagement along with purposeful goals, and 3) discuss an optional extension activity of taking 4-5 pictures during selected steps of the food preparation to develop an experience book for the child to tell and retell the food-making activity.

  • Participants will discuss the rich opportunities for expanding children’s language development using interactive food activities.
  • Participants will follow an example of making pizza to illustrate how to incorporate specific linguistic and academic areas of focus, such as language concepts, vocabulary, math, sequencing, etc.
  • Participants will discuss the value of taking pictures during the activity to develop an experience book for the child to tell and retell the food-making activity.
