Children Presenting with a Dual Diagnosis of Hearing Loss and Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has a prevalence of 1 in 59 children. The prevalence of co-occurring ASD diagnosis with children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) could be as high as 7% nationwide, with belief that this may not be capturing the prevalence in totality due to access to evaluation and treatment of ASD. There is an educational gap in providing access to approaches to communication support, education and intervention strategies for children who are DHH+ASD, with resulting additional communication challenges, beyond what is typically seen in D/HH or ASD populations alone. The purpose of the proposed study is to collect data through online surveying on the experience of families whose children were diagnosed with a congenital hearing loss in the past 10 years and who are suspected of having or received a diagnosis of ASD. The results of this study will be used to fill the gaps in training of speech language pathologists, audiologists, early interventionists and allied health professionals so they can provide more equitable care that is supportive of family needs and is not biased in regards to communication modality or educational strategy.

  • The participant will be able to identify point of contact for children with dual diagnosis of hearing loss and autism spectrum disorder
  • The participant will be able to identify the gap in access to children with dual diagnosis of hearing loss and autism spectrum disorder with
  • The participant will be able to interpret family experiences of children with dual diagnosis of hearing loss and autism spectrum disorder
