Unlock the Benefits of Bedtime Stories
“Early reading is more than just a nice thing to do with kids,” Dr. Hutton explains, "It really does have a very important role to play in building brain networks….. As every parent who has read a bedtime story knows, this (brain building) is all happening in the context of face-time, of skin-to-skin contact, of the hard-to-quantify but essential mix of security and comfort and ritual. It’s what makes toddlers demand the same story over and over again that allows snuggling bonding moments.” (Dr. John S. Hutton, a clinical research fellow at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.)
Yet parents with emerging ASL skills struggle to share even a simple baby board book with their d/hh child. One parent shares, “Suddenly, once pleasurable experiences like bedtime stories became daunting tasks. How do I read stories if he can’t hear the words, and how can I communicate the stories if I don’t know the signs? I felt like a failure.” (What No One’s Saying About Deaf Kids – On Deafness.)
This Poster presentation will introduce Simple to Sign books created and designed to support families learning ASL. We will explore research-based features such as; their phonological benefits being written to rhyme in ASL, QR codes that teach signs as needed and illustrations by Deaf artists. Fun and educational books help parents build bonds of love and language through enjoyable bedtime stories.
- Participants will discuss difficulties of reading/translating books in ASL.
- Participants will identify at least two features of Simple to Sign books that mitigate challenges in reading/sharing books in ASL.
- Participants will be able to identify a rhyme in American Sign Language and create a rhyme in ASL.
