Sensory Disabilities in Early Intervention
Hearing loss and vision loss are low incidence disabilities. The incidence decreases even more when a child has hearing loss, vision loss and a comorbid disability. The number of students with sensory disabilities continues to increase in classrooms around the country and parents, ei providers and teachers aren't always prepared to work with these kids. There are no evidence based strategies for children who are deaf with disability so we as practitioners need to look at evidence based strategies in other fields and start applying them with our students with sensory disabilities. With strategies like visual schedules, environment organization, routines and reinforcement, we will see an improvement in our kids' behavior and time on task. This presentation will discuss how to identify a child who is seeking sensory input or is getting too much sensory input and how to support them in the home.
- The participant will learn ways to identity when sensory integration is an issue in with a child with hearing loss or visual impairment
- The participant will be able to learn sensory strategies and how to incorporate them in the home
- The participant will learn how to support parents identify things that are sensory triggers
