Trends in the 1-3-6 Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) goals in New York State
The Joint Committee in Infant Hearing established newborn hearing screening to be no later than one month of age, audiologic diagnosis evaluation before three months of age, and infant diagnosed with permanent hearing loss should be enrolled in early intervention (EI) before six months of age, known as the 1-3-6 goals of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI). Three-year performance averages for each of the 1-3-6 EHDI goals from 2017-2019 were compared to three-year averages for 2020-2022 using Hearing Screening and Follow-up Survey data for New York State. Downtrends were observed for all goals over the study period. The average percentage of infants who were screened by one month of age decreased by 1%, the average percentage of infants who did not pass hearing screening who received diagnostic evaluation before three months decreased by 6%, and the average percentage of infants identified with permanent hearing loss enrolled in EI before six months decreased by 12%. This poster will further explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and highlight current programmatic activities aimed at improving performance on the EHDI 1-3-6 goals following the COVID-19 pandemic in New York State.
