Fundamentals for establishing Patient Center Care for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children

Providing care for children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing can be challenging as their communication needs are often overlooked, especially in the medical setting. I will discuss patient-centered care fundamentals with providers and parents, emphasizing the potential to enhance the overall quality of medical visits for families and significantly improve health outcomes. It is common for doctor's offices to overlook the unique communication needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients, resulting in ineffective communication. This oversight poses a risk to the quality of care, as Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients may struggle to understand what is happening during medical appointments, potentially leading to increased anxiety. By promoting awareness of patient-centered care fundamentals, we can improve overall health outcomes. I will focus on three critical aspects of patient-centered care: quality of information exchange, fostering healing relationships, and patient autonomy by addressing the specific needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients. I have conducted a thorough literature review on patient-centered care and its relevance to the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community; based on my findings, medical professionals often overlook these essential aspects. Addressing these points can significantly improve families' experiences of medical appointments. My presentation will help empower providers and parents to become better advocates for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients from the start of their journey.

  • The participants will be able to define key aspects of Patient Center Care.
  • The participants will be able to describe the benefits of Patient Center Care. for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Patients
  • The participants will be able to sumerize Patient Center Care.
