Using data logging to increase device wear time in preschool-aged children

Despite early identification and technological advances for infants and children with hearing loss, the lack of full time device use still prevents many of these children from reaching their maximum potential. Full time device use can be difficult for preschool-aged children for a number of reasons, which will be shared and discussed with participants. Datalogging can be a powerful tool to not only identify those children who need to increase their device use but also to increase parent awareness and motivation to improve their child's device use. In years past, counseling parents regarding the expectations for datalogging has shown an overall increase in device wear time. This year, we will systematically track datalogging for preschool-aged students in a specialized DHH program. The parents of preschool-aged students will receive counseling by the school’s Educational Audiologist. Different tools and strategies for counseling will be discussed with participants. Datalogging will be tracked several times throughout the 2024 calendar year, and the results will also be presented to participants.

  • List three barriers to full time device use in preschool aged children
  • Describe how data logging can be used to increase device wear time in children
  • Identify three strategies or tools that can be used with parents of preschoolers to help increase their child's device wear time
