What Should All Waking Hours Look Like?

Research indicates that in order for a child to meet the developmental milestones for speech and language, the child requires an estimated 20,000 hours of listening time from birth to age 5. Children with hearing loss need that same 20,000 hours of interactional experiences with technology on. However, research states that the average wear time of technology from birth to 5 years is between 4.5 to 5.5 hours per day, totaling approximately 10,000 hours of listening time, half of what is required. This poster presentation breaks down, by age range, the appropriate hours of technology wear time needed for a child with a hearing loss to achieve the same goal of 20,000 hours of listening. The use of the baseball diamond image serves to represent the appropriate wear time based on age with consideration of their waking hours. This visual also emphasizes the importance of the EHDI 1-3-6 guidelines that support early intervention services for best language outcomes for a child with hearing loss. Options on how to improve wear time, for a child wearing cochlear implant(s), hearing aid(s) or bone anchored hearing technology are also offered in this poster presentation. In addition to appropriate weartime, parents who interact with their child through routines, book reading, songs and play can eliminate or reduce the 30 million word gap that children with a hearing loss may experience by age 5. These strategies are highlighted for professionals as “Coaching Tips” for parents and caregivers to practice in their natural daily environment. We anticipate that the information on our poster will support parents and caregivers as they navigate their path in a Listening and Spoken Language Program.

  • Identify the hours of equipment wear time by chronological age.
  • Recognize the risk associated with inadequate use of hearing technology.
  • Select retention options for improving wear time.
