The Working-Together Continuum: Enhancing Collaboration Across EHDI Systems

What does effective collaboration look like to you within your scope of practice? When you utilize collaborative practices, how do you strive towards a common goal? Collaboration could easily be described as professionals allocating time to share their ideas with one another to work towards a common goal. Mitchell et al.(2020) research highlights the importance of specifically defining collaboration practices, analyzing the type of collaboration occurring and determining where it may fall on the “working-together continuum”. Effective collaboration is essential for the enhancement of early hearing detection programs. As professionals working in collaborative spaces, it is critical to evaluate the systems in which intervention is provided to determine the areas of improvement. Mitchell et al.(2020) first presented the working-together continuum, to assist in identifying the elements of shared-creation collaboration. Those elements include “increasing degree of interaction, intensity of engagement and mutuality” (Mitchell et al., 2020, pg 735), among the professionals working together. The working-together continuum can support professionals in identifying where their collaborative practices fall within the range of the continuum. Each early intervention providers’ standards and ideals about collaboration may differ, so we should first understand our own workplace systems to determine how we may incorporate the elements of the working together continuum. Reflecting on your current workplace, can you identify an area that could be improved with further knowledge on meaningful and effective collaborative practices?

  • Describe the collaboration continuum, in order to enhance their understanding of ideal forms of collaboration that are useful in Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programs
  • Analyze and evaluate their current workplace collaboration practices and identify the characteristics within their collaborative efforts and where it may fall on the collaboration continuum
  • Prioritize one action to enhance collaboration within their current workplace to improve outcomes that are sustainable for young children and their families
