Teacher Concern Input in Speech and Hearing Communication Screening Measures: Creating awareness around the value of feedback provided by teachers on communication delays in a screening program
Introduction: Identifying speech and hearing concerns as soon as possible is of the upmost importance in minimizing barriers to educational attainment. Speech and hearing screenings are widely used measures to mitigate the potential impacts of speech and hearing concerns on education in kids in school settings, however not all screening programs elicit teacher input on a child's communication development. This research aimed to identify which communication development questions were impactful when asked to teachers in identifying children who may be at risk for a communication delay.
Methods: A retrospective review was performed of a large screening program in Colorado. Teacher input was evaluated for children ages 2-5 in a large screening program in Colorado on the day of screening. Responses were evaluated from teacher questionnaires, eliciting their input on their student communication development. Those responses were compared to the student's screening results.
- Consider the role of teacher input in school aged hearing screenings
- Evaluate important communication milestones in relation to screening results
- Consider potential implications of teacher input on screening results/referrals
